A cooker hood is the appliance people stop noticing. It gets louder by degrees, it pulls less each year, and by the time anyone rings it is doing very little except making a noise. Both of those are usually the same fault: grease has loaded the filters and the impeller until the motor is working hard and moving almost nothing.
We repair chimney, integrated, canopy and island hoods — motors, impellers, switches, control boards, lighting and the ducting behind them. Where a hood is recirculating rather than venting outside, we will also tell you whether it is actually doing anything, because a carbon filter that has never been changed has not been.
It is also the cheapest appliance on this list to put right, and the one where a proper strip and clean most often turns out to be the whole repair.
Faults we see most
If one of these sounds like your appliance, say so when you book — it is often the difference between a repair finished on the day and a second visit for a part.
- Much noisier than it used to be
- A grease-loaded impeller running out of balance, or worn motor bearings.
- Running but barely pulling anything
- Loaded filters, a crushed or over-long duct run, or a backdraught flap stuck shut.
- Lights not working
- Lamps, lamp holders or the driver. Straightforward, and often done inside the call-out.
- Switches or touch panel unresponsive
- A failed membrane or control board, or moisture that has got behind the panel.
- Motor hums but the fan does not turn
- A seized impeller or a failed run capacitor.
- Smells push back into the room
- A backdraught flap that is not closing, or a recirculating hood with a carbon filter long past its life.
What happens on the day
- Grease filters and impeller stripped and degreased — this alone is the fix more often than any part.
- Airflow checked at the hood and along the duct to the outside terminal.
- Backdraught flap and wall or roof terminal checked for the blockage that is usually behind a weak extractor.
- Motor bearings and capacitor tested rather than replaced on a hunch.
- Carbon filter life explained and the right replacement identified if the hood recirculates.
Questions we get asked
Is my hood worth repairing or should I replace it?
Hoods are the best value repair we do. The motor is usually the only substantial part, and more often than not a proper strip and degrease of the impeller and filters is the entire job.
How often should filters be changed?
Metal grease filters want washing every month or two — most go through a dishwasher. Carbon filters on a recirculating hood are not washable and need replacing roughly every six months; once they are spent the hood is moving air and removing nothing.
Mine vents outside but pulls very little. What is wrong?
Usually the duct rather than the hood: a crushed flexible run, too many bends, or a backdraught flap or external terminal stuck shut. We check the whole path, not just the appliance.
Can you convert a recirculating hood to vent outside?
We can reroute and refit existing ducting and fit the correct terminal. Cutting a new opening through an external wall is building work and we will point you to the right trade for it.
